I looked out my window Saturday evening and saw beautiful young ladies dressed in gowns – splashes of green, coral, orange and red.  It is not uncommon in Nashville to see girls dressing wearing floor length dresses so at first glance, I just thought:  How pretty!  And then, I realized it was prom night.  I flashed back to a night in April of 2008, my late-husband, John and I were having dinner at our favorite restaurant in Brownsburg, Indiana along with our niece, Andria.  Seated next to us was a group of 14 teenagers out on the town dressed elegantly and laughing out loud having their pre-prom dinner.  We told them how beautiful they looked and had a brief exchange.  John later called our server over and told her that he would pay for their dinners asking her not to tell them.  But the server was so touched by John’s act of generosity that she couldn’t resist; she had to tell the group.  They got up from the table and the guys shook John’s hand thanking him and the girls all hugged him – they were in disbelief that someone could be so generous to complete strangers.  They asked if we would take a picture with them so they could always remember John.

As I recalled this moment, my cup spilled over and over, I could feel my heart panging and opening.  That act of generosity which was pure goodness, this love we are still lives in me.  The power of generosity is immeasurable and the miracles it creates, we cannot even comprehend with our finite minds.  John’s generosity lives on even though he is no longer in physical form.  His generosity wasn’t just him paying for the dinners, it was him being inspired to act and following the call of his spirit; it was him seizing the opportunity to connect and to let them know they matter.  Heart to heart, human to human, soul to soul, he changed their lives.  He opened them to the Beauty of living, the joy of celebrating life individually and collectively.  And I have no doubt those kids who are now in their twenties still remember this moment and will remember this act of generosity the whole of their lives.

The invitation this day is to stand in the moments of your life knowing you are the offering and there is nothing greater you can give this world than you; Acts of generosity spring from this love you are.  Claiming this truth, you must share your Self generously all day long because it feels damn good.  You matter so much that withholding this love you are causes you pain and stifles your flow of joy in living.  Living open, freeing this love, scattering our seeds of promise everywhere we go makes every day a celebration.  Walk your paths with your hearts wide open and watch them open wider and wider than you knew was possible.  Be generous being YOU!
